Online safety tips

Finding a room or a flatmate online is safe when you take sensible precautions. Here are our recommendations for staying safe when using SpareRoom.

Keep communication on-site

Use the SpareRoom messaging system for all communication until you are confident the other person is genuine. Avoid sharing your personal phone number or email address in your first few messages. Our messaging system keeps a complete record of all communication, which protects both parties.

Trust your instincts

If something feels off — for example, a host is asking for payment before you have met or seen the property, or a guest is evasive about basic questions — do not proceed. Legitimate hosts and guests will not pressure you to rush into anything.

Never send money upfront

Do not pay a deposit or advance rent until you have viewed the property in person and confirmed it is real. Rental scams typically involve an urgent request for payment before a viewing. If you have not seen the room in person, do not pay.

Arrange a viewing before agreeing

Always view a property in person before agreeing to move in. A video call is a reasonable first step, but is not a substitute for an in-person visit.

Meet in person safely

When viewing a property for the first time:

  • Tell a friend or family member where you are going and who you are meeting
  • Meet during daylight hours if possible
  • Trust your instincts — it is fine to leave if anything makes you uncomfortable

Report concerns

If you encounter a listing or member that seems suspicious, use the Report link on their profile or listing to let us know. We review all reports and will act promptly.

In an emergency: If you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services on 000. Do not wait to contact us.
